Job Summary:

The rural clinic Assistant is responsible for preparing exam rooms for patients, assist patients to exam rooms, and prepare patients for age appropriate patient assessment. Document assessment and monitor vitals, patient interventions and outcomes to care. The Assistant will demonstrate safe and competent care, reflective of the philosophy and standards of Gritman Medical Center following policies and procedures. The Assistant will be responsible for multitasking, performing patient registration, update and continuing education through accureg, scheduling, telephone attendant, patient referrals, prior authorizations for procedures and medications, calling in prescriptions under the direction of the provider, patient charging, ordering supplies for the clinics, how to access and send medical records along with maintenance of paper charts and electronic health records. Other necessary skills include lab draws, lab competency and documentation of daily QC, EKGs and assisting providers with minor surgeries. The Assistant will understand the immunization administration process, educate, and document immunizations both from state supply (VFC: Vaccines for Children Program) and private Gritman supply for all ages. The Assistant will understand how to properly order and update vaccines in the IRIS program online.

Customer service: Provides assistance and accurate answers to customers. Researches customer complaints and responds per GMC policy. Refers patient to financial counselor as indicated. Keeps waiting room and patient rooms tidy and free of safety hazards. The Assistant will demonstrate a code of conduct reflective of a professional health care provider. Gritman Medical Center's mission, vision and values will be demonstrated in the daily practice of the Assistant.


Minimum Education: 
National Medical Assistant certification desired.
Required Skills:
-Computer knowledge/skills including word processing (Word) and spreadsheet applications (Excel).
-On-the-job training or proprietary software.
-Excellent customer service skills, including written and oral communication.
-Ability to organize and prioritize work assignments.
Minimum Work Experience: 
Prior medical office experience is preferred.


Population Served: Neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric
Physical Demands:
-Lifting: Occasional: 5-30 pounds several times daily. Items lifted-binders, paper reams, charts, files, etc…
-Push/Pull: Moderate force required to push files, boxes of supplies as well as wheelchair bound patients weighing over 100 pounds.
-Carry: Up to 30 lbs.
-Transfers: As needed for patient assistance
-Fine Motor: High degree required for paper and computer work as well as medication administration
-Climbing: None
-Standing: Up to 30 minutes at one time per occurrence
-Sitting: Up to 30 minutes at one time, multiple occurrences daily
-Stooping/Kneeling: UP to 5-10 minutes per occurrence, multiple times daily
-Driving: Must hold a valid driver’s license and occasionally drive to residence of a home-bound patient.
-Other: Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Talking, hearing, and seeing abilities are essential for communications with staff, patients, and the public.
Environmental Conditions:
-Location: Office environment.
-Minimal risk of injury due to proximity of moving parts on computer, printers, fax and typewriter.
-Some exposure to cleaning chemicals.
-Some exposure to biohazardous materials and blood/body fluids.
