Job Summary:

Provide anesthetic care for all types of surgical procedures to both adults and pediatric patients in the surgical theatre, Family Birth Center, and Diagnostic Imaging and Emergency Departments. Will coordinate and cooperate with the management and supervisory staff of Surgical Services and Gritman to provide for the smooth and efficient administrative function of the surgical services and assist Gritman in the development of appropriate protocols for anesthesia and surgical services in meeting CMS and Joint Commission standards, Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP), Core Measures, and other requirements as they may, from time to time, arise.

Qualifications

Must be a graduate of an accredited school of anesthesia and have experience with General anesthesia, Regional anesthesia, and placement of invasive lines and invasive monitoring.

Responsibilities

• Independently conduct and/or review anesthetic evaluation of patients prior to surgical proceedings, deliveries or other pertinent medical procedures.
• Review patient charts, including consents, pre-operative medications, lab work, and any other significant variations, such as hearing aids, dentures, contact lenses, or other prostheses, in accordance with Gritman’s policies and procedures.
• Evaluate patients to identify apparent difficulties with airway control, etc, and ensure that all pre-anesthesia evaluations are documented thoroughly.
• Explain tests, procedures and disease processes to patients and their families as indicated.
• Explain the major anesthetic risks to patients as requested and document that the risks are explained to patients.
• Develop the care regimen of assigned patients; implement the anesthesia plan; administer selected anesthetic consistent with patient safety, surgical need, possible post-operative complications, and patient’s history and conditions and evaluate and manage the patient.
• Participate with post-anesthesia care unit personnel in a patient safety oriented interface with patients that are transferred from the surgery suite.
• Monitor patient’s vital signs, any significant physical changes and take any necessary remedial action.
• Keep current, accurate and complete record of procedures performed and patient’s conditions prior to, during and immediately after the administration of anesthesia according to established standards.
• Administer monitored anesthesia care (MAC), regional, including femoral and intercostals blocks, and general anesthesia as deemed appropriate by the CRNA.
• Support the hospital units for difficult IV starts.
• Consistently maintain a high level of privacy and confidentiality for the patient and patient information
• Provide periodic continuing education related to anesthesia care for hospital and medical staff.
• Participate in quality improvement activities related to anesthesia services and report on a quarterly basis to the Surgery and QI Committees.
• Act in accordance with Gritman’s Code of Conduct and Standards of Behavior at all times.
• Practice good communication skills and the ability to instill confidence in patients, staff and physicians.
